This morning in Brasil, a large part of Africa, Turkey and Russia was been visible a total solar eclipse. When a total eclipse occurs, there are some zone on earth (like Rome, exactly) where the solar eclipse is partial. This picture was captured during this partial phase of the eclipse on the flat roof of the phisics’ building at the University ‘La Sapienza’ with some friends of mine.

Eclipse: partial from Rome, 29 March, 2006

To realize this picture I used a orange solar filter, a tripod and I set the ISO speed to 400, a time exposure of 1/80 seconds and f/4,9.

This experience has remembered to me, with a lot of wistfulness, the total eclipse of 11 August, 1999 I saw in Hungary.

This photo shows a sunset on the Adriatic sea, it was taken from a running train heading Trieste (in the North-East of Italy), and I love its hue homogeneity.

Sunset on Sea

For publishing this picture I have before downloaded it from my digicamera, I have rotated the frame and I have cropped it. Nothing else graphics correction was applied to this photo.
And I love that too :D

This summer I met a nice cat in a street in the North-East of Italy. This cat:

Bicolored eyes cat

Using the flash, light was reflected through the iris. Probably a difference of angle of refraction between two eyes creates different colors.

Here is an old picture of a sunset near my house. It was taken in April but it still preserve all its unchanged charm :D
An old sunset

To capture this image of the Sun I set an exposure timing of 1/2000 seconds, ISO 50, an aperture of f/4.7. The only digital correction I made was a greater color saturation. The rest was made by the atmosphere.

To realize this picture I pointed a jet of water through a thin layer of Sun light.

Water'n'Light

The result is a fusion of drops of light and motion. The focal lenght is of 6 mm.

How can I comment on this picture? I can only say that I love the light that (I don’t know how) I’ve successfully captured, especially on the water, and the smallness of the two principal subjects: the angler and the lighthouse.

The sea, the angler, and the lighthouse

If you want to know some technical notes: an exposure timing of 1/1600 seconds, ISO 50, an aperture of f/8.3, focal lenght of 17 mm. Image was obtained at 9 o’clock along the northern Adriatic coast (not so far from Venice).

The sand, the people and the sky

Last week I went to Pescara, a city by the Adriatico Sea. There was an international meeting in astrophysics but in the evening we had some spare time. So, why don’t walk on the foreshore and capture some picture?

The sand, the people and the sky

In this vertical picture I wanted to show the beach from the micro-scale of the grains of sand in the bottom to the macro-scale of the vastness of the sky in the top, through the motion of a girl that emerges from the sea, raising the water with a leg.

I shot this photo at 6 p.m. and the light of Sun was weak, so I have only applied a levels correction to this picture.

Dichotomy of colors

In a raining evening, during a break between two pelting, I captured this dichotomy of colors.

Dichotomy of colors

Making this picture wasn’t easy for lack of light and the motion of cars. A good compromise solution was an exposure timing of 1/8 seconds that also allows to make out the weak light of the crescent in the top.

Simply fire

Simply fire, hot, light, and impalpable, in a fireplace.

Simply fire[update: this photo had participated at Photo Friday in 04-01-05 ‘Hot’ challenge as link n.508]

It was taken with 1/1000 seconds of exposure and ISO-400 to fix the plasma motion and capture the maximum of color.
This picture wasn’t graphically manipulated.

Running past the dawn

After easter holidays, I’m back to publish my best pictures. The following was taken on a running car, at 6 o’clock (winter time) in Friuli’s countryside.

Running past the dawn

Note how the close-up field appears “dragged” because of motion of the car.

The technical notes are: aperture f/4,9, exposure timing 1/100 seconds (to avoid to make a completely blurred photo), ISO-100.
